Windows Explorer: "not responding" Me: going nuts!

I use Windows Explorer to view JPG and RAW files stored on a 2GB CF card and
in My Pictures (targeted to a separate 320GB HDD named F drive). Typically I
have Windows Explorer and Photoshop v7 open simultaneously. I am running a
legal XP home on a brand name desktop (P4 2.8G with 2GB RAM). Both users have
administrator rights.

I use explorer to transfer files from the CF to the HDD. This is a daily
routine and the constant freezing up of explorer is driving me nuts. It
doesn't appear to matter what size files I work with or how many I am viewing
or copying or processing. I have tried to identify if there is a sequence
that leads to the non responding explorer but nothing seems to predict when
it will happen. I have also tried opening through my computer, My Pictures,
Picture and Fax Viewer, but it all ends in tears.

I plan to ask for help through the pbase website but thought I should check
out with the Microsoft experts first in case I am just using the software
incorrectly.

Your CF card is in your camera or a USB card reader when you attempt this
transfer of files? A USB2 card reader is by far the preferred way to
transfer large files to and from a memory card. They cost about $25.00.

I read the CF card in a multicard reader installed in the computer.

It doesn't seem to matter whether I am reading from the card or from the
disk. The problem usually occurs when I double click on a thumbnail to open
the image for viewing through Pictures and fax Viewer. Then quite erratically
the system freezes and the only way to restore function is to open the task
manager and end the task either by closing the task or logging of from the
user.

The most irritating aspect of this situation is that it happens
unpredictably. I might have viewed 20 or 30 images on the card then tried to
open a file in another folder on the HDD and Bingo! No response.
