Windows Explorer (not IE)/Graphics reboot?

After running for about a year with very little trouble I have run into
a problem I have not been able to track down.

Running Windows XP full addition original equipment. From time to time
for about two months now it will reboot. It appears to always be related to
Windows Explorer (or My Computer). In addition it appears to be related to
graphic files often/always? when displaying graphic files as thumbnails.

It does not seem to be a heat problem. I can run for days with out a
problem and it will crash/reboot the first time I hit the explorer or it may
do it in the first five minutes after turning it on from a dead cold start.

I tried going back to a restore point prior to the time this seemed to
start, but no good.

The "reboot" causes the screen to go blank, and the explorer program to
end and some of the icons on the right side of the tray disappear, although
the programs appear to continue to run.

Many virus and spyware checks have been done and memory chips and all
plugs and boards have been checked for good contact.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I really don't want to do a clean
re-install, but it is beginning to look like that. It is going to take
forever to put everything back and get all the updates done.

Thanks

Joseph;
I don't know what is causing your problem, but this may help with one of the symptoms.
Right click My Computer | Properties | Advanced tab | Under Startup and Recovery |
Settings button |
Under System Failure | UNCHECK: Automatically restart | OK | Apply | OK.
This should stop the reboots. Maybe after you do the above, you will get error message(s)
when whatever it is happens again.
Maybe I read this wrong. Does the machine reboot or does the Shell (Explorer) stop and
restart?
If that is the case, what I told you will do nothing.

Yea, I had seen that idea and was planning to use it the next time I was
about to tackle some graphic projects. Thanks.
