Hi,
I have a HP Pavilion notepook PC that has Windows XP Media center installed
in it.

Recently i have noticed that while working on my PC the windows explorer
stops responding and the machine sort of locks up. After i do a Ctrl+Alt+Del
and do an "End task" to the windows explorer the PC starts responding again.
At times i have to do an "end task" 4-5 times in a single session.

My machine details are
Drives : Only C:\
used space: 39 GB
free space : 54 GB
RAM : 1 GB
OS: MS Windows XP Media Center Edition. Service Pack 2

Please provide inputs to resolve the same

This can happen for two reasons:
- Hardwre problem/driver or overheating system.
- Software Damaged or corrupt and Malware/Viral infection.

=>... Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced .

Click on General Tab (1st Tab on the left) and you will see a Button called
[ Clear History ..] click on it to clear your History caches, then click on
[Delete Files..] to delete Internet Files created over the time, click on [
Delete Cookies...] to delete your cookies left by visiting websites.

Click on Connections tab then click LAN Settings Button, there make sure
nothing checked.

= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the None/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit .
How to manage Add-Ons:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883256

Scan for malware from here:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-gb/default.htm?s_cid=sah
http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-gb/default.htm

Run disk clean up and Defrag in safe Mode then run this command:
sfc /scannow

Does it help?
If still no joy then we need the error messages in the Event Viewer by doing
this:
Open a Notepad, customize or minimize to the taskbar as you will need it
later for this step to copy the error message on it.
Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr.msc click [OK] you will get the Event viewer control Panel.
click on each of these:
Application
System
Security
Look in the right Pane/window for error message with red (X) or Yellow
exclamation mark /!\ , double click each one to get more info about the
causer.
On the Event error properties message you will see:
Up Arrow
Down arrow
Two pages
Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the Notepad
you opened earlier and right click on the first line and select Paste from
the list, this will paste the error message on a Notepad.
Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be sufficient.
HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Please we need just the error messages with Red (X) and don't repeat the
error, just one of each kind and post them back in your next post.

HTH,

The 1st post might have helped but youre problem(s) are with "Windows
Explorer",not internet explorer....Either way,open event viewer & get more
OS details.Open "warning,or events"...

I am having a similar problem with Windows Explorer stopping responding and
having to kill it through Task Manager. Running Windows XP SP3 (Media Center
2002 Edition) on a Dell Dimension. Penium 4 1 GB Ram. 228 GB hard drive with
170 GB free. Running Norton Internet Security 2008 (and have been for about a
year, with no significant problems until the past couple of months).

The latest error message received when this happens is:
Hanging application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.5512, hang module
hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000. Also received an
application error message: Fault bucket 734037209.

Earlier today it even caused a "blue screen" system error with the following
information:
Error code 1000007e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 806e694f, parameter3
f7aadc30, parameter4 f7aad92c.

A little before this happened see that a mini dump was created. I could
attach that, but I don't know if anyone can read it.

Any help would be appreciated since this seems to be occurring with
increasing frequency.

Thanks!

I have this problem using Windows XP, Media Center Edition 2002, with Service
Pack 3 installed. Not only does my computer hangup on accessing links from
emails - it also hangs when trying to access folders from a short cut on my
desktop. If I enter Word 2003 from the program mode, it will open everytime.
But, if I try to access a file through the desktop folder, it hangs up. It
will eventually open, probably 1-2 minutes.

As Peggy wrote below, I only started having this problem a couple of months
back. I seem to remember it starting just before I downloaded Service Pack 3.
Is this the same issue?
I don't get any error messages associated with this delay.
My computer is a Gateway GM5260, Intel Core 2 CPU, [email protected], 3.25 GB of
Ram.

Thank you,
Karen

Thanks for the quick reply. I already posted the error messages I've
received. I have checked in device manager and don't see any conflicts or
malfunctioning devices. I've run the extended set of diagnostics provided by
Dell for this system (3 hours worth!) and it found no errors. I've not been
able to find the pstat.exe and dmpchck.exe programs you mentioned, to run
them. I've even checked on my Windows XP CD and the Utilities CD provided by
Dell but didn't find them there either.

I'm actually not as concerned about the "blue screen" happening as I am
about the continually increasing problems with Windows Explorer locking up,
unless the blue screen occurs again. Would it make any sense to do a repair
install of Windows XP? If so, will it leave my other programs, data files,
etc.? I would hate to have to start all over again with loading everything,
if I don't have to.

Is there any way to repair Windows Explorer all by itself?

Thanks.

Well, if you going to do a repair install you will not lose your Docs but it
will be wise to backup your data just in case something goes wrong!
Also things to consider, uninstall SP3 if you updated your system to this
stage of Service pack.
or you can slipstream SP3 into your XP CD Installation media so you don't
need to Install SP3 or Uninstall it but make sure you don't have IE7
installed.
