Go to Start/Run and type: eventvwr.msc and press OK. In the event
Viewer, click on each of the items in the left
side menu and look for any X error messages that correspond to the last time
this behavior happened.
Double click the entry to see the details of the error. This may give you a
clue as to program/hardware is causing the problem.
Click the small icon at the right of this details box that looks like 2
small text pages. This will copy the error message details
and you can paste this info in a reply to this message for us to take a
look.

Another thing to look at is Start/Run, type: msinfo32 and press OK.
Expand the Components item and click on the
Problem Devices item. If there is an entry for a hardware device there, it
could be where the problem is coming from.

I suggest you search Microsoft's Knowledgebase about this.
IE6 has some bugginess that MS is aware of.

Also, you may wish to reinstall IE6 with SP1.

If most things are the same, and you're sure you're
protected from viruses, an update to IE6 may work.

All the PCs in my house had this problem for a while.
The MS updates, and IE reinstall seems to have helped.

Nick,

It may be a malware BHO, causing the problem. [Applies to Explorer / IE as well]

To test with: Disable third-party browser extensions in Internet Explorer
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Internet Options.
3. Click the Advanced tab.
4. Under Browsing, click to clear the Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart) check box.
5. Restart Internet Explorer.

Try to open Internet Explorer again. If you are able to open Internet Explorer, then, the problem was caused by a malware BHO. Use BHODemon and spot the malware BHO causing the problem.

Download Ad-Aware from www.lavasoftusa.com and follow this:
1. Start Ad-Aware.
2. Click [Check for Updates] [Connect] and download the latest pattern file if available. and click Finish
3. Click [Start] [Next] (System will now detect the spyware)
4. After the scan is finished, click [Next]
5. Select all the items (checkboxes)
NOTE: Right click on any object in the "Scan result" list and choose [Select all objects]"
6. Click Next and click OK to confirm spyware removal.

(Hi Ramesh)

From what I can determine, the xvid.dll is associated with a DivX video
standard. You might want to check to see if there is an uninstall in Control
Panel/Add and Remove Programs for a program by the same name. More
information is at the following URL.

Update the xvid video codec:
