Windows Explorer doesn't show external hard drive

I have a JVC Everio camcorder. It records on a hard drive. I connect it to
my XP computer with a USB cable. When I do I hear the sounds from the
computer that it has been found. The camcorder acts as a USB Mass Storage
device, essentially a 30GB hard drive. BUT... when I go into Explorer to
find the hard drive and access it, it doesn't show up. It should be the "F"
drive for example.

On my other computers it shows up as the "F" drive.

I can click on Device Manager and find it under Disk Drives when it is
attached via the USB cable. When I unattach it, it disappears in Device
Manager. BUT... no matter what, I don't see it and can't access it through
Explorer.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do to be able to see it and
access it in Explorer? Thanks for any help.

Right click on My Computer and select Manage. On the following screen,
click on Disk Management. It should show up on the right hand side of the
screen. Assign it a drive letter. Now it should appear in Explorer.

Cari - this almost worked. This is the closest yet. I went in to Disk
Management and actually saw the drive. It was unassigned. I assigned it a
letter. BUT it won't show up in Explorer.

I assigned the Everio the H: drive. Do I need to do anything to save this
setting? The good news is that if I click on the drive in disk management I
can see the contents of the drive, but that is the only place. I can't see
it in Explorer or anywhere else I have looked.

Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks so much.

You must partition and format it. Right click on the drive, and you should
see where to go from here.

Cari - but remember that this is a hard drive that is inside a hard drive
video recorder, not a regular hard drive inside the computer.

When I take this same video recorder and connect it to my laptop with the
USB cable, it shows up in Explorer with a letter corresponding to it, then I
can copy the video files, etc.

if I format it I will lose all the video and my problem is just getting the
computer to assign a letter to it in Explorer so I can access the files.

I did what you said and I was able to see the drive in disk management and
then I accessed the drive there and copied all the files, but clearly that is
a work around. I still don't understand why, when I assign a drive, it
doesn't show up in explorer.

Any other thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for your thoughts.

Unfortunately, that doesn't work.... I wish I had a way to put an image of
what it looks like here. Can i do that, a jpg? If not, do you have a site or
email address I can send it to? i am about to give up on this. I know disk
management is the way to go, but once assigned, the drive letter doesn't
"stick"...

Uwe Uber Alles! You are a genius. It worked! Thanks you SO MUCh for
replying to my post. All I had to do was delete the 3 files in the windows
directory (the dll's) and reboot. It is amazing. I have spend hours and
hours trying to resolve this. You are the only one that had a solution and
it was so simple.

Now I see all the drives AND even though the video camera is a portable hard
drive essentially, it always comes up as the "L:" drive so I named it JVC
Video and the name sticks even when I reboot or disconnet the video camera.
Thank you SO MUCH for helping me out!!! You are awesome.
