Has anyone else noticed when you open a folder with say, 10 movies in it, it
tries to pull up the info on them, generate a thumbnail that windows
explorer always restarts because it stops working? that is the single most
annoying thing I have seen with vista so far.

I would be interested in hearing other ppls experiences?

cheers

Hi,

What size are the movies? If it can be replicated, then you should file a
bug report.

hi

they are tv episodes, about 24 in one folder...

how do I go about filing a bug report?

cheers

See the blue and white round icon with a question mark on your desktop.
Click it and you will get links and instructions on how to share your
sentiments (a hyperlink) and how to download the bug reporting tool so you
can file well organized reports with all the needed file attachments (which
the software gathers for you).

Been having exactly the same problem for a few weeks now... REALLY annoying.
What browser are you running? I think the last answer I saw pointed at
Mozilla Firefox as the cause of this bug.

Ok,

it occured to me when I installed Vista on a different machine (it didnt
display the problem im having) that perhaps it was a codec problem as the
fresh machine without the codec didn't even thumbnail at all!

I uninstalled all codec thing, i.e. AC3 filders, fddshow divx... everything.
Now it works. Oddly though, the thumbnailing is working so it might have
been a codec not related to Xvid...

anyways, remove codecs and reinstall one a t a time , don't use the codec
packs!

:-)

The problem is not with the codecs but rather with the Search Indexer.
Go to Control Panel >> Programs >> Windows Features Then Un-Tick the
Indexing Service Feature.
Explorer should now work Fine.

Every time you open Explorer it searches the folders and compares it with
the "Index" it seems to compare the whole file for changes and Movie files
are large so it slows down.

The search funtion in Explorer still works after this.

HOPE THIS SORTS OUT YOUR PROBLEM

You need to disable Indexing Service as a Windows Feature ( Control Panel >>
programs >> Windows Features untick Indexing Services)

The search Funtion Will still work

I think there must be multiple causes then because I am running the
pre RC1 release (5536), do not have indexing turned on, and yet I
consistently run into explorer crashes when there are several
thumbnails that need creating. Mind you they need not be movie files,
in my case they are usually just JPG’s. I haven’t scientifically
determined if there is a threshold number of images that sets off this
behavior (or for that matter maybe it is a certain type of image).
Anyway it is annoying and I was surprised to see this problem still
showing up on pre RC build.

Other side notes, I am using Firefox as my default browser. Earlier in
the thread I heard someone say that this could be contributing. It
seems like a strange association but I’d be interested if there is any
other news on this.

Regarding codecs, how would one go about managing the codecs you have
on your computer? I would consider uninstalling/reinstalling these if
people think this could solve the problem but I’m not sure how to do
it.

Last note, I haven’t yet tried it but I know at least in earlier
builds explorer crashes could be minimized by disabling DEP. Does
anyone see this problem we’re having as being related to DEP?
