Is there any way to restore the XP appearance for windows explorer? I
prefer the old tree appearance, icons and indentation. The vista version is
too hard to see -- there is not enough indentation, I can't tell where I
am. I also miss the "up" button.

Take a look at PowerDesk. Version 6 is available for free - google for
powerdesk free.

It is clearly indented and so on. You can also easily have it look like 2
file managers tiled side by side (or up and down) for easy viewing and
copying and pasting. I bought version 7 but the older versions still work
well. I remember a previous version (it could be 6 or perhaps 5, I don't
remember) that had an option to set it up to look like Explorer instead of
Powerdesk. But Powerdesk setup has a drive bar so you can choose a drive
without scrolling down. I've tried many other file manages available for
download and Powerdesk is the closest to the old Explorer with some extras.

Hi Paul,

No, there isn't. There are other file managers available on the web.

One has to wonder how MS considers these changes "improvements". The
absolute worst implementation of this new strategy is in MSIE
favorites. If you have a lot of favorite folders, the interface
unusable.

I find the favourites totally unusuable. Visually its a total muddle. I need
to be able to change the colours of the main folders which of course you
cant do.

To work round the problem I've created a folder at the top (AAAetc) and now
shove everything into there. I then open the favourites center, pin it and
drag into the correct folder there. This is less than ideal and takes a lot
more time. Also if I have newly added or deleted a link, it doesn't always
show up in the favourites centre until a new page opened.

FYI, the next version of XYplorer file manager will feature user-defined
indentation. Here's a preview shot from the current BETA version where you
see a pretty wide indent:

BTW, the greenishly highlighted node is where you are.

Mine is totally unusable too, although the colors are not an issue. I
have a few hundred folders since I keep my bookmarks logically sorted.
It make it impossible to use the "Add Favorite" feature.

Another way to handle it is to choose View -> Explorer Bar ->
Favorites. You can then explore through the folders to find where you
want to put the favorite. When you find the right spot, drag from the
address bar to that folder.
