Talking about Microsoft's File Explorer (before that Windows
Explorer, before that File Manager).

This one "Q-Dir" appears to be popular...

Since I'm doing some serious file manipulation, what I really need is
for this idiotic Microsoft Windows Explorer program to follow the
highlighted folder (I suppose Classic Shell has that option). While
I'm at it, tabbed file management sounds good too.

When the folder in the left-hand pane is highlighted, its contents
should show up in the right-hand pane. But if you use the cursor to
move through folders in the left-hand pane, the contents do not show
up in the right-hand pane like they should since the freaking folder
name is highlighted. This has been broken since after Windows XP.
Microsoft management jerks.

Q-Dir does it!
YES!

They even have a portable version. My kind of software.
I suppose the payback is having their program name in the title
bar, but it's worth the price.

FWIW... I meant "if you use the arrow keys"

This thing should know that its follow-up shouldn't go to the
groups it considers improper. It's follow-ups should be confined
to the group that it expects follow-ups to its post to go to.
Don't post to all of the groups and then expect others to follow
up to a chosen fewer groups.

I don't know why you posted this to a newsgroup about *hardware*, but I
use Free Commander: <http://www.freecommander.com/fc_downl_en.htm>

Previewed a bunch of different File Manager replacements. All of
them allow using the arrow keys to navigate, almost all as the
default setting.

Settling on Classic Shell with just Explorer settings. It allows
some important changes without having a jillion different
unnecessary settings. Love that open source software.
