I have just logged on to this site and hope I can find a solution to a
recurring problem I'm having. I have XP Professional service pack 2 on my
computer and when I open up a file in my Documents section am getting the
error message 'Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to be
closed. We are sorry for the .....'. If I simply move that window around I
can continue what I planned to do originally but if I click on the error msg
window everything's cleared, so I feel that I only need to do is keep that
msg from appearing? But I have tried the method suggested in
http://windows-help.,net/WindowsXP/tune-08.html and it does not
solve the problem. Have also tried many other things (including looking in
gpsedit.exe and that really messed things up but I may not have done it
right). Am very hesitant abt trying
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/IEFIX.htm? Any suggestions please?
it is extremely irritating. I did send an email to Microsoft abt it and they
sent me the hotfix KB816506 but it did not solve the problem

Has this just started happening recently? You could try using System
Restore to return your system to a point where it was working.

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.

The most common cause I've found for this happening is bad video codecs
being installed. A simple way to confirm if it's a file causing the crash
when the system tries to make a thumbnail of it would be to go to the View
menu and select Icons. If it then goes away, that's the probably cause.

this problem has been happening for several months and what I'm trying to do
is simply move some pictures from a file I've created in My Documents to a
cd. And I can do it if I just keep moving that little error box around. I
have tried that System Restore method to no luck. Not really sure how to see
if it a file causing the crash.
And thanks for the quick response

What kind of file?

What program is that file type associated with?

What makes you think this is an IE question?

Have you posted to a WinXP newsgroup?

I'll try to explain as exact as possible and I know I may not be asking in
the right place but I really do not know where or how. I have made a file or
whatever one calls it in My Documents......it only contains various pictures
I've saved from various sites on the internet. My aim is to transfer those
pictures to a cd. In proceeding to do that I click on My Documents, then
Yahoo pics (the name I call it) and after a while that error pops up. Now if
I simply move it around w/ my cursor I can proceed to copy (or move) the
pictures to the cd.

And now I have no idea what is happening?!!?? I was trying to do the
process again to give you even more detail and everything went along
fine......was able to move some pictures and the error msg never popped up?
This problem has been occuring since the beginning of July
.................but this morning I did look further into the Microsoft site
and downloaded some other things.......security updates, etc. But around
the end of June something weird happened and my computer crashed. I nearly
went beserk but was able to bring it back up. But of course I had to
download everything again including my upgrade to the service pack 2.

You need to post to a WinXP newsgroup. I would suggest this one:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

If clicking that link doesn't get you there, then in Outlook Express go to
Tools | Accounts | Add (or New) | News.
Set up an account for this news server:

msnews.microsoft.com

The server is free and does not require you to logon. This news server
carries over 2200 newsgroups related to Microsoft products and keeps
messages at least 30 days.
