The Explorer.exe program from Win98 & Windows 2000 has no
problem finding files that contain "text" strings
identified in the search window.

The Explorer.exe, Version 6.0.2800.1221, that came wih my
Windows XP Pro apparently can't find the same text string
that the earlier versions had no problem finding. Have
they made the new version "DUMB"? Is there some switch or
configuration setting that must be changed to get it to
work like it should?

I gave up trying to figure out XP's new search a long time ago. I use a
replacement search tool "FileLocator Pro." It is shareware but the same
company also offers a free tool (still more agreeable than XP's Search)
called Agent Ransack: www.agentransack.com

Cool, does it activate on F3
I've been unable to have success with that feature too. I hate that it uses the same window as I'm working in. I normally open a new window first for searching filenames or use Textpad to search for text in files. The search feature in '98 was SO much better.

No F3 but the program is accessible in any folder via the right click
menus. I dropped a shortcut into Quick Launch for one click access.
When searching for text, file names/paths are listed in one pane.
Select any file and the matching snippet of text that it contains is
displayed on the right. Supports scripting, reg expressions, saved
searches and on and on.
