Whenever I try to open a Windows Explorer File (Commpresed Folder, My
Computer) I get an error message that says "Windows Explorer has caused an
error, and needs to close" It just started doing this last week. What should
I do?

I am having the same problem but mine started about 3 weeks ago. I have XP
SP2, Norton systemworks 2005, Spybot, AD-Aware 1.05 Pro, Microsoft
Antispyware and spyware blaster all installed. There is no viruses nor
spyware found on my machine. How could this problem be resolved? I even
have the technical info stored on my PC that is automatically sent to
Microsoft. Please help!!!

I'm having the same problem as Dave O. Mine started about 2 weeks ago. I also
have Xp with SP2, Norton System Works 2005, Microsoft Anti Spyware, Spybot,
Ad-Aware, NoAdware v3.0. None of these programs find any spyware or adware.
My specific error signature is: App Name:explorer.exe; AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180:
Mod Name: ntdll.dll; mod Ver: 5.1.2600.218: Offset: 00018fca Anyon have any
ideas?

I ran cwshedder 2.1 2 and i found no nothing. I should note that ieexplorer
does not acutually crash. When I click on an Icon such as "my document', "my
computer" or "favorites" I get the error message I previously noted and after
I hit the send or do not send button on the error message all my icon blank
out then reset. If I then hit the "my document" a second time ieexplorer
works fine.

I don't know what's happening. Sorry.

Hi Lyn :-)

In doing a bit more research on this subject, I have found that there are
several other events that can cause this kind of problem. Program
incompatibility with XP, multiple copies or versions of the ntdll.dll being
installed on the system from MS updates or programs, corrupted file, as well
as a known virus.

Below is information on these various situations and possible solutions that
might help resolve your problem:

Windows XP Service Pack 1a

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx

(installing this to resolve the problem with various versions of the file,
although it does not state so)

Hope this helps

Jan I, I checked for Nimba virus (not a problem since I have updated Norton

seems ok. One thing I did find was four ntdll.dll files as follows:

NTDLL.DLL C:\I386 Version 5.1.2600.1106 3/31/03
NTDLL.DLL C:\I386\system32 Version 5.1.2600.1106 3/31/03
ntdll.dll C:\Windows\system32 Version 5.1.2600.2180 8/4/04

ntdll.dll C:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386 Version
5.1.200.2180 8/4/04

Looks like I have duplicate files. Any suggestions?

That is more or less what I suspected. That seems to be one of the primary
causes of this error, next to malware or the virus.

The research I found indicated that this file can become corrupted by other
installations, and by installing the SP1a here should set things straight.

Windows XP Service Pack 1a

You can also try replacing the file by extracting it from the XP CD,
however, the update may work as well.

Lyn,

Except for the fact that this thread is being made (OT) in an IE
newsgroup I am curious why you are reporting that.

Judging by the error signature if anything should disappear
it would be your Desktop and Taskbar, so you might then see
(e.g.) nothing but your background color. However, there is
error recovery built into Windows which restores it more often now
and thus prevents you from seeing that symptom.

FYI explorer.exe is that part of Windows XP, nothing to do with IE.
For example, you can still run IE just fine even if you use Task Manager
to kill explorer.exe
