1) View Menu>layout>disable Preview Pane>apply/OK

2) Open ONLY ONE new mail window>resize it with your mouse by dragging the
edges to full screen>CLOSE that mail window.
Windows will remember the size of the last window closed.

Next time you open a new mail it will be as you closed it.

1. Don't use the preview pane: View, Reading pane, Off.

2. Open the email. Don't use the maximize button, but use your mouse
to drag a corner of the window until it is full size. Hold down Ctrl and
click the red X. The next time you open a message window, it will be full size.

Sorry, my first item is based on WLM's menu path.
I see that Steve ('mac') has posted the correct WM menu path.

"View, Reading pane, Off".

Gary which program uses that setting please?

Not WM, because preview pane is under View>Layout.

thx guys, much appreciated. However, switching off the preview does not
prevent windows automatically opening the next email in my inbox after I
delete. Any ideas?

Then you did not apply the change while viewing mail in your Inbox, you have
to double click a message to view it with preview pane disabled. News and
mail preview are separate.

Your Inbox should show a list of messages only, no text etc.
