Windows Easy? File Transfer--Has Anyone gotten it to work?

I got directions for this with my new PC & from the Microsoft website. In
one of their few areas of consistency, both said I needed to install WET on
the old XP computer, which I did by downloading form the MS website. On my
first attempt, my new computer said the files created on my portable hard
disk by my old computer running WET could not be read. They had be copied as
read only and could not be read evenafter I changed that attribute. On my
second attempt, WET on my new computer told me that the DAT files created by
the old one were created by an earlier WET version and could not be
transferred. But I installed WET AFTER I bought the new computer from the
allegedly up-to-date MS website. Any ideas on how to make Microsuck
work???????
 
Do yourself a favour simply copy data to your external, then from there to
Documents folder of Vista

Windows XP has the WET installed, you didn't need install WET again.
When you run WET, the wizard ask you to choose if you would like to tranfer
files from just one user or all users. To choose all users, you need run WET
with administrative privileges.
Be sure that you aren't use roaming profile.

Thanks to those who suggested not to struggle with Windows Easy Trf, esp. as
no one said it worked! By the time I posted originally, I had transferred my
data & picture files using the removable hard drive (I can always copy files
if Windoze does not inexplicably hide them or make it more complicated than
that!). Also, thanks to a helpful post 4/20/09 from Gordon under Trf of
Outlook Express 6 using WindowME to Window64-bit Vista, I was able to
transfer my Outlook files to Windows Mail, a process that a good program
would do without the quirks Gordon pointed out. That left my Favorites, and
when I searched the discussions for that, I came across Transfer Favorites to
New Vista PC posts from 4/24-28/2007, esp. the helpful one by jimmuh, who
likened using EZ Trf for that like using a baseball bat to swat I fly and
agreed omport/export would work (it did). The only enhancement i can make to
jimmuh is to say using EZ is like using a broken bat for the flyswatter!
