Windows Domains in a home Network? How can I set it Up? Or Should

I would like to learn how to set up windows domains for my home network. We
currently have 4 desktops and 2 laptops (WinXP x3, Win98 x2, & 1 I toy
W/Linux on) but we are adding more all the time. I think this would help me
eliminate some problems by being able to specify more than 2 user levels, and
having a central password list and profiles. I would like to be able to
restrict administrator privileges to myself while granting more rights to the
other adults in the house than the kids have access to. and the standard
"Limited" setting in WinXP can be to restrictive also, even for the kids.

Any suggestions, comments, tips, or resources would be GREATLY appreciated.

You can't set up any sort of domain without Server Software......mega
bucks......

What about a "GASP" wink wink -Linux server?

I don't know how that interacts with setting up a Domain.....might bear
(sorry!) some investigation....

You can download & use trial versions of Windows 2003, etc...you can also
look into virtual computing (VirtualPC, VirtualServer, VMWare, etc) to make
this a little easier in a small/home office without a slew of hardware.
Google for

download evaluation "windows server2003"

....no need to xpost to so many groups, btw. :)

SBS 2003 standard is not really mega bucks, shop around, you could get it for
around $500 if I remember correctly, for all that it does, thats quite a
bargain!!!

There is no problem using a machine running some Linux distro as a file
server with Windows clients. However, the term "domain" is a Windows
term. You haven't told us your end goal and that makes a real
difference. For instance, if you want to learn Windows domain networking
- how to set up Active Directory, etc. - then you will need a machine
running Windows Server 2003 and machines running Windows XP Pro as clients.

If you only want to have a file server and want to avoid the incoming
concurrent connections limitations of XP Home and Pro - and that file
server will not be running Windows programs - then a Linux distro will
work nicely. I'm fond of SUSE but Ubuntu is also very good.

If you want something more complex, then you can purchase a Linux server
but those are not free. SUSE makes a lovely server OS, as does Red Hat.
Or you could look at Mac OS X Server which is excellent.

To create a domain, you would need to start with a server operating
system, such as WinNT 4.0 Server (may it rest in peace), Win2K Server,
or Windows Server 2003.

WinXP Pro, as a workstation operating system, is an excellent
choice for a client OS to use on the domain's workstations. Win98 and
WinXP Home, however, are not designed to, nor can truly be made to,
join a WinNT, Win2K or Win2K3 domain.

Mostly I want to bypass the inherent limitations of WinXP's 2 user level
system (Administrator or Limited) and be able to use the User Groups System
but I Also intend on having a central file server so that is not a problem If
it is Necessary the main problem is i need at least 4 user levels and would
love to be able to use roaming profiles so that you can log into any system
and have the same setup ............. but from what i understand that is
going to REQUIRE i set up a domain if i can do that in Work groups so much
the better but that is what i am trying to set up .......

AGAIN -
Any suggestions, comments, tips, or resources would be GREATLY appreciated.

AND ...........................
THANK YOU! For the Comments and Suggestions thus far I really do Appreciate
it even if I don't get back here to check on it very often.

The use of roaming profiles does mandate the existence of a Windows
2000 or Windows Server 2003 domain.
