I have a eMachine T2085 running Windows XP w/SP2. On Fridary 7/6/07 I was
working with updates (Adobe & Windows) and installation (an inventory
program). I had no problems with any of this until I turned my computer off.
When I restarted it (and every time it has been restarted since) I got
Windodws Document Viewer with an Error code of 1706, file type .msi. I have
tried all of the fixes that I found in this database and none of them work. I
uninstalled Adobe and inventory program and updated Windows Installer. Even
went to msconfig (there was nothing there that should be triggering this
message. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Please! I am able to get rid
of the message with ctrl, alt, del but then it's back when I restart the
computer, and that is very annoying. Thanks

And this had what to do with a HARDWARE problem, the topic of this
newsgroup?

Did you install KB927891 during Windows Update? It has to do with the
MSI program. The KB934238 update had to do with the XPS viewer, if
installed.

Whenever you EVER run Windows Updates, and even when not prompted to do
so, a reboot may be required so do one anyway.

Microsoft wanted to include a "Save As" feature in Office 2007 which
allowed saving to the PDF spec. Adobe reeled because that would take
away from users having to buy Adobe's PDF Writer utility (included in
their other products). So Microsoft came up with their own paperless
doc spec which was XPS; read
http://news.zdnet.co.uk/software/0,1000000121,39273094,00.htm. For info
on XPS, read http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/xps/default.mspx.

Since Microsoft doesn't include XPS in Windows XP updates so if you have
it then you installed it. Did you install the XPS add-on to Office 2007
(see
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...-3e7e-4ae6-b059-a2e79ed87041&DisplayLang=en)?
We don't know which version of Office you have. I don't have Vista or
Office 2007 so I don't know if there is an entry to remove XPS using
Add-Remove Programs or if you need to rerun the setup for Office 2007 to
remove XPS from the options tree list. Otherwise, I found
http://pcwin.com/Utilities/Uninstallers/XPS_Removal_Tool/index.htm which
will uninstall it. If you want it back, you could use the above link to
reinstall it or go to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...dd-e3a5-44cc-8021-7649fd37ffee&displaylang=en.
I guess I'd first try the Help -> Repair in Office to see if that fixes
the problem first.
