Try tapping F8 the next time you start your computer. When you get the
menu select Safe Mode. If it boots into WinXP
you can try a System Restore. Go to Start>All
Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. Just follow the
instructions. Choose to restore to a date prior to any problems
occurring.

I receive the following message when I try to start Windows XP:

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start
successfully.
A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
If you computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was
automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last
Known
Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.
If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure
or
because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure
what
caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.
(these are the choices:)
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration
Start Windows Normally"

I can move the highlight up and down, but the minute I press enter on
any of the options nothing happens the screen just stays right where
it is, and if I let the countdown go to 0 nothing happens either.

Anyone have any suggestions???

Uh oh. Did you add any new hardware or software shortly before this started?
Try removing any unnecessary peripherals and internal cards (sound card,
card reader, etc.). Is this a relatively new PC or an old one that may have
a thick layer of dust inside the case (that should be removed to prevent
over-heating)?

Can you get to Safe Mode by pressing F8 before XP barfs (start hitting F8
multiple times right after the POST is finished)?

Failing the above and without the benefit of additional information, it
sounds like an OS re-install may be in order...or it could be a sign of a
failing hard drive.

Having the same problem on my laptop. The F8 thing works but when I select
safe mode I get back to the same message eventually. Any more suggestions?
