When spell checking, I add words to the dictionary, to facilitate future
spell checking.
Can anyone advise where this dictionary is kept, so I can back it up
regularly?

In what program are you doing the spell checking?

Windows, as an operating system, naturally has no spell-checking
capability, or any dictionaries. Perhaps if you were to post this
question in a newsgroup or forum dedicated to whatever word processor
you have, someone there could help you.

Thanks for reply. I tried it in microsoft.public.word.general, and had no
response. Can you suggest a more active discussion group for Word? This one
seems to have very few responses.

If you're using Microsoft Word, search your computer for a file
named CUSTOM.DIC. The default location for Word 2003 is this
folder,

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application
Data\Microsoft\Proof

For Word 2007, it's in this folder,

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application
Data\Microsoft\UProof

You can edit the file in Word 2003 by click on Tools ->
Options -> Spelling and Grammar tab -> Custom Dictionaries
button -> Modify button.

In Word 2007, click on the Office button -> Word Options
button -> select Proofing -> Custom Dictionaries button -> Edit
Word List button.

Good luck
