I have been downloading files through the night but I
keep saying the files which were downloaded have been
lost. It goes on to say it may be a fault with my
hardware or my ISP. I am running broadband and my PC logs
tell me that I have not been cut off by my ISP. It is a
new computer running Windows XP with 516mb memory and a
speed og 2.6 GBkhz. It tells me to download these file
elsewhere. What can I do and what is meant by "elsewhere"?
Thanks in advance for any advice. Ciccio54

It means another drive. Delayed write failure often indicates a problem
with the hard drive or hard drive controller (on the motherboard). It
can also be caused by another application or utility locking the system
so that the write times out. I have seen that happen a couple of times,
but once was a 16-bit app, and the other was a badly written one.

My suggestions:

1. Run chkdsk on your drive (look in windows help for instructions)
2. Make sure you have a virus scanner and that it has the latest
updates to both the program and the definitions. It could be malware,
or can be caused by an outdated virus scanner.
3. Shut down all other programs on your system before attempting the
downloads. Try not to run to many utilities.
4. Make sure your hard drive has at least 10% free space on it. You
can run with a little less, but it is not recommended. (maybe I should
make this #1)

Drive timeouts can also occur because of a failing cable, or poor
cooling of the system.

True, but these popups can also point to a network redirector. What is the
full exact error message?
