Jeff

I am experiencing a known system error condition (detailed
under MS Knowledge Base article 816004 - Event ID 50
error) where the 'Windows - Delayed Write Error' dialog
box is displayed with the following (beginning) text:

Windows was unable to save all the data for the file
\Device\HarddiskVolume??\<subfolder...>\<filename...> The
data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure
of your computer hardware or network connection. Please
try to save this file elsewhere.

Depending on the circumstance and the number of HDDs
mapped to your PC, the 'HarddiskVolume??' number will vary
(mine is 'HarddiskVolume1'), as well as the subsequent
subfolder path (one or many), and specific filename
involved in the Event.

I believe, for my current situation, this error is related
to the improper removal of a Dell thumbdrive from its USB
port. What is NOT clearly detailed in the MS/KB article
is how to resolve the issue (which continues to persist).

If anyone has knowledge of this problem AND how to get rid
of the 'Windows - Delayed Write Failed' error messages,
please let me know. You can respond here and/or to my
email (remove the 'UNSPAM' from the addr). Thanks!

As a follow-up to the above, I failed to mention my OS
specifics: Windows 2000 Pro w/SP4.

Again, thanks to anyone out there who might have a
resolution for this.

Hi Jeff,
you are probably right with your "improper removal" theory.
Try to stop the thumbdrive before removing it.
Double click the trayicon for the removable devices, choose your
thumbdrive, click stop. Remove it after confirming everything
according to this action. if the error doesn't come up again,
you've got it.

btw: Windows XP handles this problem by disabling the write-cache
for the removable device by default. I'm currently looking for a
way to do this in w2k. If anyone knows how, please let me know...

thx & greez
