I installed VISTA and was having defender issues- So I Un-installed defender
and the upgrade went great-

Now I want to install defender and it wont let me. Says that defender is
part of Vista and fails the install- Have tried to rid all components of
Defender from PC thinking that the reinstall from the web site would be
smooth- but still no success- Worse is that I get failed messages now because
the updates for defender don't install.
Can someone help me get defender working again.

Sorry, I can't help because I don't have Vista, but I'm curious how you
un-installed it... I thought it was not generally un-installable on Vista,
since it's part of the Operating System and not available for removal under
Control Panel Add/Remove... Vista Defender is certainly not the same
program that's downloadable from the Ms download site, you'll probably have
to use your installation DVD and the "SFC /scannow" command.

If anyone can help you, I think they'll need to know how you un-installed
it.

Windows Defender is part of the Vista OS. There is no add/remove process
exposed in the UI for it--either as a standalone program or as a part of
Windows.

What makes you think that Windows Defender is not running? If you go to the
Security Center, does it tell you that no antispyware application is
running?

If WD is indeed part of Vista, then you should be able to uninstall /
install it as Windows component (on the same panel as Add / Remove
Programs).

Not necessarily. Not all parts of Windows have separate install/uninstall
routines, even as Windows components.

Microsoft did issue an optional Windows Update to Windows Defender on Vista
on April 11. I'd recommend installing that optional update.
