XP SP2
When I try to update Windows Defender I get error code 0x80244023.What is
the fix for this?
 
0x80244023 WU_E_PT_HTTP_STATUS_GATEWAY_TIMEOUT
HTTP 502 - the server, while acting as a gateway or proxy, received an
invalid response from the upstream server it accessed in attempting to
fulfill the request.

Either the firewall, proxy server, or malware is causing this issue.
If you haven't posted this issue to the WD newsgroup as yet, please post
back with what firewall/proxy server is being used and when was the last
time the system was scanned for the presence of malware.

Unable to turn on firewall. When attempted I get a message "Windows firewall
settings cannot be displayed because tkhe associated service is not
running. Do you want to; start fire wall? When I click yes I get kthe
message "Windows cannot start firewall/internet connection.

I scanned for malware Jan. 12.

Try scanning your computer with the 2 programs below to check for
Spyware/Malware.
Defender is not a very good Program to do it!

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6 is a very good, FREE Anti-Spyware Program.
Download, install, update, and immunize your System with it.
Then SCAN with it.
Update it, and scan your System once a fortnight.

Malwarebytes is as the name says, a Malware Remover!
For the Free version scroll down their page to either download from
Download.com, or Major Geeks.com

Download, install, and update.

Important re: Safe Mode
If you happen to find a problem that you can’t uninstall / delete, reboot
the computer, and go into Safe Mode.
To get into Safe mode, tap F8 right at Power On / Startup, and use UP arrow
key to get to Safe Mode from list of options, then hit ENTER.
RESCAN your computer with your Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes and Spybot S & D
while in Safe Mode

The malware has disabled the firewall and set up a proxy or redirected
the DNS service. See Mick Murphy's post and follow the steps he's laid
out. When the malware is detected and identified, please post back with
it's name so that futher steps can be recommended.
