i keep getting the following message:

application failed to initialize. 0x800106ba. A problem caused windows
defender service to stop. to start the service, restart your computer or
search help & support on how to start a service manually. i this an error i
really have to worry about.

Un-install Defender and then re-install Defender should fix this.

I am geting the same error message. What is the solution?

I get the same message. In fact all the security software now fails to
start. The problem began after the latest Windows update of 10/24/08. What is
the solution?

That critical update came to me yesterday (23rd). It does not seem to
have affected Defender, which is doing a scan as I write. However, it
did force me to have to reboot my cable modem and router.
