Does Windows Defender need to be left running minimized to provide real time
protection. When I close it I don't see an icon anywhere. Help file does not
explain.

No you do not have to minimize Defender, it run in the background automatically. By the default
installation condition, no icon shows unless it need attention (update or it missed several scans
dates). You can change the default in the TOOL menu then Options. Scroll down the page and you
will see the option.

You really should spend some time in the TOOLS menu so you can see what configuration options you
have.
I know, "read" (rather it is the manual or the menu options) is a four letter word.
