Since I posted question on how to reinstall Windows Defender and reading all
the problems that are associated with it, I am now glad it is disabled. I
have Norton Internet Security on Windows Vista Home Premium and as soon as
Windows Defender was disabled , I recieved two pop ups for Norton taking over
the responsibilities of Windows Defender. Since then I have not had any of
the problems associated with Windows Defender running out of control on my
system.

I wouldn't let Norton (Symantec) near any system.

Can you elaborate more why? Norton Internet Security has problem?

If the initial install of Norton does not break Windows or your mail program
a later update will. A recent update to Norton rendered Chinese versions
unbootable.

It just digs too deeply into the operation system, slowing it down and
eventually breaking it.

Note: Don't replace it with McAfee.

And you would suggest ..... ???
My recommendation these days is Spy Sweeper with AV. The best
spyware/malware scanner, bar none. With AV, it's even better. Doesn't
seem to slow down the system either.... Symantec/Norton products have
become bloatware and the reliability of their updates have degraded
recently. I used to recommend Trend Micro. It has a firewall built in,
but it, also started to slow the system down....

I had Norton AV on one machine and Norton Security suite on another. Both
computers got slower and slower as time went by. I had heard about Norton
slowdown and changed. I went to AVG free edition (AV only) on one, and Zone
Alarm Security Suite on my primary computer. The difference in speed on both
is like comparing a Model T with a jet plane!!
No real experience yet with functionality with AVG (installed yesterday).
Zone Alarm is good for firewall (perhaps a little over aggressive )and AV.
The spyware feature detects well but I have not been able to get it to remove
anything it detects. Zone Alarm does not know how to fix it, just says the
stock answer.."uninstall and reinstall", but I will continue to use it
because of the firewall.
Far and above the best anti spyware I have used is Ad-Aware.

windows Defender just appeared today when Windows mail was set up. I am a
novice and I had no idea what it is. I do have Spyware and Trend Micro.
Does something have to be uninstalled. Thank you!

I don't believe Defender will interfere with other Spyware or AV programs and
nothing needs to be uninstalled. BUT, I have yet to find that Defender has
ever detected or blocked any spyware. Ad-Aware and others find and remove a
lot but not Defender.

I've installed Defender on a number of home computers (XP's that is), and it
always comes up with something on the first scan, usually it's best at
detecting trojans. But no single spyware will do a good enough job for you.
Running another anti-spyware in tandem with Defender is necessary.

No. Windows Defender is an anti-spyware that comes with Vista, and you
should not disable it. You're not telling us what message Defender popped
up, so I can't tell you what you should do about it. Can you post some kind
of description?

I think it depends on what Bill Gates calls "Spy ware". I may be wrong,
but I'll bet Uncle Bill invented cookies so it's not likely he would
engage in expelling them from the average computer. I think Defender
would do a better job at detecting Trojans, but tracking cookies are to
be left alone.

I am having problems as well and would love to know how to delete this
wondows defender. I have anoather antivirus and spyware and would like to
use those. Please help
Thank you

you cannot uninstall WD in vista
What you can do is turn off the Resident Shield by unchecking it in Options.
this way it is not running in the backround in real time.

I keep having a compatabilty issue with Windows defender. I keep getting a
blue screen. I have Vista 64 bit I have also installed Kaspersky 2009 as my
antivirus. I have looked for problems to solve the issue and ran it in auto
to look for a fix. I keep getting a reply that says there is fix at the
present time. What can I do to keep from getting a blue screen and shut down
of my brand new laptop. I have only installed certified software,
Nero,Microsoft office and a few games?? Could not find the button to disable
as you said to do.

Thanks Whitney
