Please tell me how to ALLOW windows defender to open? I always have a message
in the "notification space" that a program was blocked and it is windows
defender on boot up. It says it is not turned "on" but when i open it is set
correctly.

There are no problems - spyware, adware, etc and after I close the defender
window, the "blocked" icon goes away.

But this happens EVERY time I turn on the computer.

Thanks!

Did you already have a copy of Defender installed perhaps before you did
your Vista upgrade?
Those symptoms sound like it.

Charlie

No, Windows vista was preinstalled on my new Toshiba laptop (A135-S44887)
purchased three weeks ago.

But thanks for writing.

I have the same Toshiba and the same problem with Defender. I finally
disabled Defender from running in real time and installed AVG's
Anti-Spyware, no fuss, no muss.
Defender has some interesting features, but nothing that can't be handled by
"msconfig", "task manager" and a firewall that notifies you of outgoing
traffic. BTW MS, did you catch that
last part about notification of outgoing traffic?

Hi Nospam

I am not even able to "enable" defender. I am told it is not on and not
protecting. Then I open the program, and all is well. it is set, and working.
The next day, i have the same problem. I also have the defender to scan at
11pm every day. it is not on, so it does not scan!

Yes, windows firewall does monitor outbound traffic, but, unless I'm
mistaken there is no notification when an app wants to access the internet
as in, for example, ZoneAlarm.

Enable real time protection in Windows Defender and it should become a
startup program. Go to control panel/windows defender/options and check
real time protection.

Hi there - its debbie again. all the settings in windows defender are set. it
won't stay OPEN, as in running all the time. the real time check box is
checked too. I need to allow it to open through the UAC i think but i don't
know how.

Thank you.

Debbie, do you have any other security programs installed? You mentioned
that Vista was preinstalled on your laptop. Is it possible that some other
security suite was also installed that disables Defender and prevents it from
running?

Several of the major anti-malware companies do their best to prevent any
Microsoft security software from running (and discredit what they can't
stop). If people realize they do not need expensive third-party security
suites it obviously cuts into their bottom lines. That is why many people on
this newsgroup recommend AVG anti-virus, which does not interfere with the
built-in security in Windows.

Right this is going round in circles - I am in the same boat as Debbie.

Defender claims to be off.

I only have AVG installed in addition to the basic Vista defender.

It worked fine till about 3 weeks ago then Defender just started giving
warning.

I am using Vista Ultimate and have not yet configured anything else.

What do I need to do to fix it so that Defender stays ON?

Whay is everyone having separate discussions around this and no-one
answering the question?

Is it really something that has stumped Microsoft or are people keeping
their mouths shut to wind everyone else up?

Help me please for crying out loud ....

People aren't answering because they don't know they answer. I don't either.

Run this command from an elevated command prompt please:
sc qc windefend

It should say "START_TYPE : 2 AUTO_START". If it doesn't copy the output and
paste it into a response. Then run these commands:
sc config windefend start=auto
sc start windefend

Nobody knows why it is getting turned off. There is protection in place
against turning it off, so something is clearly causing this problem, but as
we don't know what you have installed, we can't really tell.

Jesper,

Thanks so much for your clear reply.

Ran the commands as described and got that the Start Type is
AUTO_START,
I got an Access Denied message for the second command.
I finally got a StartService FAILED 1056 - Already running message.

So I can see that it isn't really off according to Windows but it is
not active according to some other part of the OS...

Anything else I can do to check?

Thanks,

Rob.

If the SC command says it is running it is. It must be Security Center that
has somehow lost track of Defender. Without having the system in front of me
though I really can't tell why that would be.

You may want to call Microsoft's security support and see if they can help
you figure out what is going on. It is free and you can find the number at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/gp/securityhome.
