Windows Defender ?

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what Windows Defender does when
it runs? The reason I ask is that my runs everyday at about 10am and
after about 5 to 10 minutes of it running the I get this 'buzzing noise'
from I think the hard drive, although I can't be sure exactly. It lasts
about 5 seconds, has no effect on the running of the computer, but the
first time I heard it my heart sank. However after hearing it at the
same time this morning (yes I know I must get out more :-) I began to
suspect it was Windows Defender running something.

Any ideas as to what it maybe checking/scanning ?

I used to have the Giant AntiSpyware, but last week an Auto-Update gave
me Windows Defender (Beta), so I've lost the old one.

It maybe just coincidental, but I thought I'd ask.

Many thanks

Some folks have reported a similar noise--I suspect it is coming from the
floppy drive. Try putting a floppy in the drive.

What windows version?

Ah, yes now you mention it, that probably is the sound, I'll put a
floppy in for the next run.

Microsoft Windows XP
Professional Edition, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00)
