Why does Defender give reports on a 'new' program (like to our Start menu)
in a link that's totally un-verifiable??? I copied the link, and couldn't
"find" it, so had no option but to approve it, knowing I'd only re-installed
my Kurzweil editor the last few days, nothing more.

Don't know what is this "link" of which you speak. As I recall (I
stopped using WD many months ago), it says what the change is that it
detected. Doesn't that tell you what got added to your Start menu?

No, it did not, in fact, I did a Search for the path - and it still didn't
have an explanation. Sorry

Apologies - I'm a blind user with adaptive software (Dragon, ZoomText,
Kurzweil, etc), and use a screen reader ... I just looked at the program and
grabbed the following...(additionally, there was an update on 2/20/08 early
AM): Microsoft Windows Defender Log, (c) 2006
Started On Fri Dec 07 2007 21:39:35
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1593.0
Engine Version: 1.1.2204.0
AS Signature Version: 1.0.0.0

Does this help? I had it before, too, and discontinued it (I also use
Ad-Aware plus Avast for AV). Thank you for your expertise.

dairyman: Where did you download Windows Defender ??
You: From MS website, last year.

dairyman: Alright, what was the link?
You: how on earth would I remember - it's been over a year.

That is what you wrote. Dairyman asked where you got WD to make sure
you get a legit version rather than an infected one from somewhere
other than Microsoft. He then asked about the "link" that YOU
reported in your first post. Presumably you are not asking about an
alert from WD that occurred over a year ago. You say that WD is
reporting a link or path. Divulge it since it may provide information
as to what is the program on which WD is alerting.

oh misery - I've lost it now. not a hint of a program in it, not even a
little "tip."

My virtual machine in which WD is installed is too busy right now and
will be locked up for awhile so I cannot check if WD has a log of
events. As I recall, WD would record its events in the Event Viewer
so go look there.
