Windows Defender will not Initialize

My PC: WinXP SP2, 1GHz, 512MB. I was happy with Antispyware, and downloaded
Defender when suggested. It has been nothing but trouble. It does not show
up in toolbar, but the major problem is I get this message at bootup:
"Application failed to initalize: 0x800106ba. A Problem caused Windows
Defender Service to stop..."
Resarting computer does not fix. I uninstalled Defender through the control
panel, downloaded a fresh 'WindowsDefender.msi' file, and reinstalled. It
continues to have the problem.
What do I do to fix it? I need spyware protection, but if this doesn't
work, I will use a different product. Webroot SpySweeper works well, but
takes up a lot of memory and makes the PC run slow.

Can you go to Windows Update, do an Express scan, and apply all offered
updªtes
http://update.microsoft.com

Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs? There are many
pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and signature
update with windows defender will fail until you hªve these files.

For the icon in the task bar, download and install on top:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en
Users who normally select advanced Spynet membership should be aware that
the install process will set you back to basic membership, so it's a good
idea to revisit both the Spynet membership area of Tools, and the Options
area--to see what's different, and check that your old choices have been
preserved.

You should see what files are involved by examining the system event lºg:
Do a start, run, eventvwr.msc, **click OK**, then click ºn

**System**, then View, then Filter, and scroll down the " event sºurce"

control to reach Windefend, that will give you a view of just Windows
Defender-related events.

Look for events with yellow triªngles

Then make a decision as to either deleting/ignoring/manually cleaning them
or in the other case emptying your restore folder and creating a new restore
point as described in these fºrums.

If the four don't match this description, let us know what the error number
is and what files are involved from the event lºg.

I hope this post is helpful.
Let us know how it works ºut.

I have been having the same problem with WD.
My system (Win 2K, SP4) has been completely updated, as you suggest and it
still will not start.
Friends of mine that are using WD are also having this problem. They chose
to ignore it or stop using it.

I believe this is a universal problem that is not being adequately addressed
by Microsoft.
