I have not successfully updated Windows Defender yet. I get the error:
Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x80070005. Access is
denied. I have tried to removing it. Doing the cmd MsiExec.exe /x
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C} and deleting the contents of the
Definition Updates folder. Still no luck.
 
Same problem here—an endlessly looping automatic update.

I checked the Event Viewer and found entries in the Application node for
Micorosft Windows Installer:

"Source: MsiInstaller
Product: Windows Defender Signatures - Update
'{2585CD31-88AC-4E7C-BDD9-74C173DFD210}' could not be installed. Error code
1603. Windows Installer can create logs to help troubleshoot issues with
installing software packages. Use the following link for instructions on

Error Code 1603 is a Fatal Error during installation. Searching for articles
in the Knowledge Base, I found one for problems updating MSN Messenger that
advised turning off Microsoft Antispyware (Beta 1)!

It's possible that Windows Defender (Beta 2) is interfering with its own
update...
