windows defender virus definitions won't update

i HAD TO REINSTALL windows defender but the crap doesn't even function
anymore, so i can't get the defenitions update not by microsft update or any
other way.
I've got 113 days no virus defenitions withe the latest windows defender.
Fine! why does this program works so badly, the first beta antispyware did
funtion foor 100 %.

Considering what you paid for it and well it works, your choice of
adjectives is uncalled for. That said, I too found it was not updating on my
W2K OS. A quick un and reinstall resulted in the same. Then I came here for
help. Tom’s reply was the push I needed to resolve mine. First I was prompted
to make sure BIT service was running. (It was not) After starting it, still
could not update. Next step was to make sure the OS was fully patched. Tried
Windows Update and that too failed, suggesting that I needed to enable
automatic updates. I must add here that I’m running ZA and after the Win
Defender reinstall, ZA never asked for access permission and I had checked
that Defender was NOT on its list. After enabling Auto Updates and starting
Win Update, retrying Defender update work just fine.
