I get this error message at startup and at anytime I attempt to launch
Windows Defender. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the application but get
the same error message. How to proceed to resolve?

XP Home SP2 with latest updates

For what it's worth ...the event application error log indicates: "Faulting
application msascui.exe, version 1.1.1593.0, faulting module gdiplus.dll,
version 5.1.3102.2180, fault address 0x00047cd7."

Thanks for that detail. The only system running Defender I can look at
easily at the moment is a Server 2003, and it has no GDIPLUS.DLL files which
are "public." There are separate ones in each of a number of apps--office
11, quickbooks, and ones associated with .NET framework 1.1 and 2.0--but none
in the Defender install folder, nor in \windows or \windows\system32.

Can you check whether you have a GDIPLUS.DLL file in \windows\system32 on
your system, and, if you do, consider renaming that file, to see whether this
a) changes Defender's behavior, and b) breaks anything else?

Was this system an upgrade over a previous Windows version? If so--what
version?

Just to expand slightly: I'd be interested to know in general, what
locations you see gdiplus.dll files on your system, and it would be
additionally interesting to know which of those files match the versioning in
the error message. Don't go to a lot of trouble though--I suspect this will
be solvable without knowing all the precise details, and there may be a
number of such files particularly in the winsxs folders.

Thank you Bill for your response.

There were multiple version of this DLL but only two with the version number
identified in the error log. One was found in C:\WINDOWS|SYSTEM32 and the
other in
C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.Windows.GdiPlus_6595b64144ccf1df_1.0.2600.2180_x-ww_522f9f82

The WDefender problem cleared itself after I discovered an external hard
disk (containing only Retrospect backup data) had a faulty USB port (over
heated!). After I replaced the USB port, the external hard drive mounted
properly and WDefender began to work. I can't imagine how these two issues
are related?

I'm having trouble correlating that as well!

If the problem recurs, I would suggest renaming the gdiplus.dll file in
\windows\system32.

(or moving it temporarily) I suspect that you may find that this file is
unnecessary for normal system operation.

Now that I've thought further about this, I do wonder whether your observed
error might relate to a bug--in some beta versions on some Windows
versions--notably Windows 2000, the presence of gdiplus.dll in
\windows\system32 was a requirement.

I wonder whether your hardware issue may have somehow caused a code path to
be exercised that isn't normally, creating this error message.
