Scott,

This will probably not be your solution but it is easy and can't hurt to try.
Close all programs, log off, restart.
Log On, connect to the internet, wait 2 minutes (to let the system settle)
Try Again.

I got the same message today, and have a couple of times before, and this
has solved it. If the problem does not go away shortly you will need a more
thoughtful answer which I'm sure my comrades will supply soon.

I've had things like that happen here, Tim. Much is going on during
boot-up, so on the welcome screen I have a few username choices and I let
it come up as much as possible (no spinning harddrive and a fresh cup of
coffee) before I click on any. The delay seems to help, otherwise
sometimes half my notification area icons are missing when I later look for
them.

Anyway Scott, if Tim's suggestion doesn't work, take a look at this KB
which includes a guided help, and just may be your ticket:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

I don't believe there's any restriction for not using it on Vista or on 64
bit systems, since it's really just a windows update problem you're having.
When you get that one resolved, let us know if there are anymore glitches.

You guys shed light like a sower scatters seeds. I've often wondered why
sometimes the odd icon is missing from the tray, but never saw the
connection with this till now. Thank you.

well today i did not do anything different from 2 days ago, but it seems to
be working just fine now.. then i checked my email and saw your post... if it
happens again i will try your suggestion.. thank you all for trying to
help... if any future problems arise, i will post them here. again thank you
!!!

Hi Scott,

Thanks for posting the error code, that's the HTTP code
ERROR_INTERNET_TIMEOUT.
This probably means your connection to WU had a temporary lapse, especially
since you're working fine now.

Thanks for using Windows Defender,
Joe
