I was prompted to download a new installation of windows defender when the
last update was avaliable. I downloaded the new one and took the old one off
and removed the registries i guess that were left over. So is it safe to
install the new one?

Sure--in fact, it is safe to just run the new download with the old one
installed and running.

However, just to be sure, I recommend closing all open Internet Explorer
windows, any Windows Defender UI windows, and turning off real-time
protection in your antivirus, just for long enough to complete the
installation process.

Bill

How do you turn off Real Time protection in Windows Defender and Windows ONE
Care?

Thanks

Tom

OneCare:

Right-click the notification area Icon, and choose Open Windows Live
OneCare.
Click View or change setting under Common Tasks in the left column.

Click the Antivirus tab in th Windows Live OneCare Settings window.

Click "Off" on that tab.

I'm not aware of any problem installing Windows Defender with OneCare
active--I've never turned it off myself.

Windows Defender: Tools, Options, Real time protection options (scroll
down.)

Uncheck "Use real-time protection."

(I've never used this option for any purpose either--and would strongly
recommend against it--real-time protection is in my opinion, the most
important functionality in Windows Defender.)

Can you explain further? I don't think I know what download problem you are
referring to.

Every time the window is open it says download over and over no matter how many times i download it.

Thanks - that's clearer.

It sounds to me as though the installation is not completing properly. I'm
not sure what you have already done to troubleshoot this, but here are my
thoughts at the moment:

1) Please disable real-time protection in your antivirus application.

2) uninstall Windows Defender (the version currently in place.)
2a) Close any Internet Explorer browser windows that are open.

3) then double-click on the new version--download it to the desktop if
necessary--and install it.

4) Enable real-time protection in your antivirus application again, once the
install completes.
