Windows Defender update fails

I have been reading through quite a few threads on problems similar to mine.
I get a security warning that my Windows Defender Definitions are out of
date, when I try to update them I get the following error in a balloon over
the Windows Defender Icon in the system tray

"Windows Defender was unable to complete the update 0x80240022
Wrong diskette is in the drive. Insert %2 (Volume Serial Number %3) into
drive %1"

It seems to me the update is trying to access a disk drive when it runs.

FYI, my PC has no floppy drive.

I have tried the various suggestion of using the "Msiexec /x
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}" with no success.

Can you gº to Windows Update, select Express (Get high-priority updates),
and apply all offered updªtes
http://update.microsoft.com

Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs? There are many
pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and signature update
with windows defender will fail until you hªve these f!les.
 
This is on a Windows Vista OS, I think I forgot to mention that.
I can use windows update to download the file, but it fails to install.
when I type in the URL: http://update.microsoft.com There is no "express"
button. It opens to a windows update banner and says "Use your Start menu to
check for updates.
It then opens the control panel windows update window.
"Download and install updates for your computer"
There is one download to install "Important update, 2.7MB"
I click the "view updates" link
Check the box next to "Definition Update 1.14.1639.16 for BETA Windows
Defender (KB915595)"
I click "install" button at the bottom of the page.
"Preparing it Install" with a green bar "flowing" from left to right. This
sets on the screen for about 1 minute then changes to "installing update"
Then I get "Some updates were not isntalled" message.
Failed: 1 update
Error(s) found:
Code 80070005

I am getting the same message. My PC's operating system is Win2000 Pro,
SP4. My partner's PC is running WinXP, and her Aug, 3 update seems to have
installed just fine.

My PC is on automatic Windows Update, so it can't be that I have not updated
with the latest fixes and stuff...

Maybe its just a "growing pain" of this beta version...??? Hope they fix it
soon. Its been working just fine up to Aug, 3 .
 
I have the same problem on Windows Server 2000 SP4. I have tried all the
suggestions I can find on the web including uninstalling and reinstalling. No
luck yet.
 
I have the same problem as well. Same exact nonsense error message. I am
running and fully up-to-date version of Windows XP Media Center Edition.
Because of this Windows Defender is all but useless. Please help!

After a couple days of trying to figure this out, I simply formatted and
reinstalled. I wanted to start with a "clean" install to track progression.
After reinstalling Windows Vista Beta2, Everything seemed to work fine. I
logged in this morning to find that the Windows Defender was not updating
again. I turn off UAC and the update went through. I am thinking this is a
security issue. Even though my user account has Administrator permission, it
does not work the same with UAC turned on.
