Suddenly the following message appears when I start the computer:

"Windows Defender: Application failed to initialize: 0x8001066a. A problem
caused Windows Defender Service to stop. To start the service, restart the
computer ande search Help and Support on how to start a service manually".
I am using XP.
I tried to unistall the program and then reinstall it, but the reinstall
process was interrupted with the message that the CPU is not suitable and
that I should get in contact with the supplier of the CPU.
My CPU has the name "AMD Athlon 64 3200" (6 months old).
It does not help to restore the system.
Whats´s on and what to do???

To correct the 0x800B0001 error, I found the following instructions;

1. Register the following files
Click Start.
Choose Run.
In the Run box, type regsvr32 wuapi.dll.
Click OK.
Repeat steps 1 through 4 for the following files: wuaueng.dll, wucltui.dll,
wups.dll, wuweb.dll, atl.dll.

2. Register the following files
Click Start.
Choose Run.
In the Run box, type regsvr32 Softpub.dll.
Click OK.
Repeat steps 1 through 4 for the following files: Wintrust.dll, Initpki.dll,
Mssip32.dll.

I'm having the same problem--started 1/1/2007. I've tried these steps twice,
and it did not alleviate the problem

Had the same problem followed advice of Bill B 1/1/07,went to add/remove
programs & unistall Defender, then to www.windowsdefender.com and downloaded
new version of Windows Defender, I have Windows XP Media Center. It worked
like a charm.
