Hi.

I have Win2K Pro SP4. When I tried to install Windows Defender I first got
an error that I needed to install GDI+. I was able to install it by
downloading gdiplus.dll and copying it to %systemroot%\System32. Now when I
try to install I get the following:

Service "Windows Defender Service" (WinDefend) failed to start. Verify that
you have sufficient priviledges to start system services.

I ran the installation with an Administrator account. After searching for
the service to start in manually it is not listed. In the event log it says:

The Windows Defender Service service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

Hello John,

Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
adinistratºr.

This is the key!
The installation as an admin is not enough.
You needed to login as an admin.

Can you gº to Windows Update, select Express (Get high-priority updates),
and apply all offered updªtes
http://update.microsoft.com

Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs?

There are many pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and
signature update with windows defender will fail until you hªve these files.

Have you tried Steve Dodson's KB
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915105

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;555175

John, omit Method 3 (special if you use Office)

I have all of the critical updates installed, am logged in as Administrator
and still get the unable to start service!! Does anyone have an install of
the original MS Antispyware version? It seemed to work well enough for me!

I had the exact same problem with Windows 2000. However I had no problem with
Windwos XP.

When I installed the latest version in Windows 2000 I was logged in as an
administrator (user with admin privileges) just like when I updated the
Windows XP installations.

With Windows 2000 I had to go back to the earlier release (Windows Defender
Version: 1.1.1051.0).
