each time i reboot, i have to turn defender on again. the icon is in the
taskbar, but is orange. i have gone to options and set it to be on. is this
normal? are there other settings i need to make? note: i am running live
onecare, if this makes a differance.
thanks

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when
posting to this newsgroup, please.

OneCare includes Windows Defender by default so if you're running WinXP, you
don't need Defender standalone installed.

ooops! sorry. vista sp1.
thanks

thanks, that explains it all. defender is disabled if onecare is installed
after it. onecare does defenders job and isn't needed.
thanks again pa bear

YW & thanks for your feedback.

Recap: If OneCare's installed, it will disable the standalone install of
Defender in WinXP and Vista so there's no need to turn it on.

I recently installed onecare (vista sp1) and was having this same problem
with defender. I understand that it is incorporate into onecare - no problem.
My problem is that Vista now comes up every time it shuts off defender with
the red shield icon and tells me anti-spyware is turned off. Onecare is still
running. The problem here is that onecare and vista's security alerting don't
seem to work together. Any ideas?

The behavior you describe could be a symptom of a hijackware problem. I'd
rececommend posting in this OneCare forum instead:
