How to I adjust the Registry setting to force Windows XP Home Edition to Show
the Windows Defender Icon?
I want the peace of mind that the AntiSpyware has indeed loaded and working.
I wouldn't mind the default setting being "Hide" if I had the option of
setting it to "Show"

Put a shortcut to Microsoft Defender on your desktop and click it whenever
and you will see that it is running green. I think you will learn that it
is always there. If it doesn't start when you boot up, you get a warning
from Windows since it is a service that runs at start-up. It appears to be
very reliable.

I don't know how to do this with the current code, I'm afraid.

I hate to vicious here but I will anyway.

The system tray icon used to always be there. Now WD is coded in such a
way that it can't be put there all the time or, horror of horrors, be an
option!

I start to wonder if we can ever hope that WD will consistently update
correctly...

....fixing a failed update on a machine as I write this...

Turning off the tray icon has always been an option--and I chose it for most
office machine installs.

A change like this takes some getting used to, but it is a design
decision--you can argue about the wisdom of it (it's bigger than Defender,
as I understand it this is a Vista standard)--but I don't see getting
aggravated about it

Paradigms change, old dogs learn new tricks--maybe we'll learn to like not
seeing all that stuff in the tray.

I, too, wish the update issues would go away--what is your standard fix? I
do see it only on a small subset of machines, but it does happen.

I only have defender on two machines, a laptop and desktop, for testing.
First the laptop always worked and the desktop failed. Now that order
has reversed. The only fix that works is the remove/install procedure
in the MS note that I have misplaced the number of.

I have only a few tray icons of applications that I access frequently
enough that using the tray is most convenient.

This old dog has been through quite a few tricks (all those who have
written a BIOS for CP/M raise your hands) and I have learned that change
does not necessarily imply progress (-;

Well--you'll get your wish at some point later in the beta. Anyone who's
written a bios is pretty unusual in this day and age. I can recall one such
participant in the XP beta--he had a great many valuable insights about
hardware issues.

I can barely remember using CP/M--which I did in the "person" of an add-on
to an AppleII, which did CP/M+, as I recall.
