Thanks for offering to try to help. I am not on my computer everyday due to
illness. So when I sign on to get my computer up and running, it says that I
have not run my Windows Defender for over 3 days and it should be done. I
have it in "Automatically to run daily at 5:00AM." I am wondering if it is
not running because the computer is not turned on at this time? When I then
hit scan, it does do a full scan without any problems. I am wondering why ,
if you have any ideas why it is not doing it "Automatically". Have I done
something wrong? I have gone into tools and checked, and it is set for what
I stated above. Any suggestions? I do NOT have alot of computer experience,
so it could just be me doing or not doing something stupid! Thanks very,
very, much!!! Watermelons8

Windows Defender will only update itself and perform
a scan when the computer is actually turned-on.

Computing 101: nothing can happen when the computer is off.

Hello watermelons8,
As the other posts had said, windows defender does not start scanning unless
the machine is turned on. However, you can make the computer to "wake up" on
scheduled time, just long enough to do the scanning, Even your computer is
OFF at the time. Here is how :-
Open Start menu > on the search box, type Task Scheduler > top panel, click
Task Scheduler > right panel, click View > click Show Hidden Tasks > left
panel, click the pointer in front of Scheduler Libruary > click the pointer
in front of Microsoft > click Windows Defender > top middle column, Double
Click( 2 left clicks )MP Schedul...> click Conditions > scroll down till you
find the box that says " wake computer to run this task ", click that box >
click OK
You are done. Close all windows. Windows Defender will "wake up" at 5 am,
long enough to run the scanning.

You have just got too complicated for a sick person who states that they do
NOT have a lot of computer experience!

Thank you very much for answering my question and also taking the time
to show me how to change windows defender to work. I know that your time is
precious, and it is very helpful to someone such as myself who knows very
little about computers, but I am trying! You did not belittle me for asking
a question that maybe I should have known (according to some of the other
responses). Other person discourages me from asking any more questions,
where as you gave me a positive memorable experience! Wish I knew a better
way to say "thanks" so that whomever runs this operation could know that you
are very helpful. Much appreciated, sincerely, watermelons8

I don’t know if you will read this post, but thought I would try. I have a
backup drive that I schedule to turn on at a specified time. My PC must be
on. When I go through the steps of Task Scheduler to turn on my PC from the
sleep mode, it asks for a program/script notation. Is there something I can
do to wake up my PC to run my backup drive?

Thanks,
Jerry
