Windows Defender not deleting spyware properly

Hi,

I have Windows Defender Version 1.1.1593.0 and everytime I scan what happens
is that it finds spyware so I press remove all and then it says that it
sucessfully removed the spyware and everything is fine. Here is my
problem.....Then after a few seconds I run another scan and it says that I
have spyware on my computer, and it's the exact same spyware it picked up
before. It seems like Defender isn't getting rid of it.

Could someone tell me how to fix this. Is it a glitch or something i'm doing?

Hi Jo:

It would help if you mentioned your OS (Windows XP, Vista, etc...) and also
what Windows Defender detected (e.g. name, resource, etc). You could try
running Windows Defender in safe mode. If that doesn't work, then try the
free version of SuperAntiSpyware at superantispyware.com (it is not
malware!). Good luck.

There are many files on your system that you can't access while you're
running Windows normally because they're in use, so the usual first step on
any problematic scan/cleaning is to boot into SAFE mode by hitting the F8
key repeatedly on bootup and then choosing to enter minimal SAFE mode where
many of the files that are normally locked by other programs running on
your system will be more accessible by Defender. From SAFE mode you can
use either My Computer or else Start > Programs > Windows Defender to start
up Defender manually and then run another full system scan while in SAFE.
However, make sure your Defender definitions are updated to be current
right now, while you still have internet access, and before you reboot into
SAFE mode, where nothing much else should be running or even be available
(like the internet).

In addition there are files that Defender will never try to clean by itself
automatically because they're perhaps part of an e-mail store, or they're
part of a packaged or archived (zipped) file, or they could be part of the
system restore checkpoint area, and automatically cleaning them blindly
would break other system components. Defender should be looking at those
particular areas though, provided you have scan archived files and folders
checked in Defender's Options panel. They can be handled manually later if
anything is found, but try the SAFE mode full system scan run initially,
and let us know your outcome.

Have you had Defender installed and running successfully for a while, or is
this a new installation to combat some specific problem on your system?

In addition to what Mr Cat mentioned.

Here's how to find precisely what is being detected and where.


Do start, run, eventvwr.msc

and hit enter.


Click on the System event lºg.


Click on View, Filter.


In the Source dropdown control, choose WinDefend.


This will give you a list of system events generated by Windows Defender.


Each detection, during a scan, will generate an event with a yellow triangle
arking.

Scroll down in the right window 'til you find some of these from the most
recent scan.

You can double click to open them and see the full details of the path and
files fºund.


And--there's a copy to clipboard button that you can use to post those
details here if you want further advice about how to deal with what's fºund.

and to add to that so you can see what WD does without using that command-
you can make a shortcut on your desktop (for xp) and not only will it show
you WD but it will show you all events.

to do this you go to Start/Control Panel/Adminsttative Tools
Scroll down till you see Event Viewer. Highlight and Right Click on it and
click "send to desktop".

This will make a shortcut on your desktop so you can open Event Viewer
anytime.

Yep. I've got that shortcut on my desktop. My problem is finding it
somewhere on an overflowing desktop. I hate it when XP nags me about
that!<g>

Hey thanx for all of you trying to help,

I found out why it wouldn't delete them.....They were in the Norton
Antivirus Quarantine folder which Defender couldn't access and then delete
the files. So I just got Norton to delete them..!

hey bob- how come you do not take advantage of xp's Unused Desktop icon? I
put all the icons that i do not use frequently in there, sure i have about
32 icons on the desktop (15 in unused Desktop folder) on the computer that i
am typing you- it is also a 15" monitor and I have them lined up 4 icons
across and four columns down- if you get my drift- Event Viewer's icon sits
on the desktop

Thank you. I had never run across that feature. I found more information

But if I didn't want them there, they would be gone!<g>
