Can you please explain to me why every time I turn my computer on it gives me
the message "Windows Defender is turned off"? I turn it back on every time,
but then when I switch my computer off and on again, Windows Defender is
switched off again. Why does this keep happening and how can I ensure that
Windows Defenders stays on?

You don`t state your Operating System but could it be you are running Win XP
with Windows Live Onecare installed (WLOC) ? If you are, then you will have
this problem because WLOC has its own scanning engine which is similiar
albeit superior to the stand alone product found in Windows Defender. If you
think this applies to you then there is no need to have WD installed on your
system.

Sorry I should have said. It's Vista and it's occurred to me that the
computer has a free 3 month trial of Norton already installed. Could this be
the reason?

Hello lippybird,

Navigate to the shortcut for the Command Prompt from the Start menu and
right click the shortcut and select "run as Administrator." Then, enter the
following command:

winmgmt /verifyrepository

Let us know the result after that command
Reboot

How about any other security programs (besides Norton) running AntiSpyware
or Firewall... what are they and does security center also gripe about any of
them being turned off?

Is your clock and Time Zone also the Date set propeÑly?

Some versions of Symantec anti-malware products do indeed disable Windows
Defender--typically by preventing its service from starting.

We're having the same problem here with Defender not running. Also, Norton
Internet Security 2009 is running on this Vista Home Premium computer.
My question is, is there a way to prevent Norton from stopping it from
starting?

Hello Nancy:

1) Please don't "steal" someone else's posting thread. Start your very
own thread with an original post that describes all your unique
parameters. This is lippybird's thread.

2) Please don't top post.

Warm regards,

Pete

The 2009 McAfee, Norton, Symantec, etc. anti-malware suite product for
Windows Vista disable Microsoft Windows Defender to improve system
performance. Windows Vista users who have installed these products should not
enable Windows Defender

If that 'error' message appears, disable Windows Defender from startup
(Start \ Run \ msconfig),

or if you wanna enable Windows Defender, go (Start \ Run \ services.msc) and
then turn off automatic scanning (in Windows Defender)

Have you read the other messages in this thread?

Windows Defender might be turned off by malware, or it might be turned off
by competing anti-malware.

The difference is crucial. What anti-malware applications are you running?
