The title explains all. Is there any way I can insure WD doesn't turn off
overnight?
I have all the proper boxes checked in Options/Tools. This has been going on
since the last update at least and probably before

Hello Yvsa,

You can repair Windows Defender.

First exit WD, click the down arrow to the right of the white question mark
in blue circle and then click Exit Windows Defender; using Add or Remove
Programs in Control Panel. Click WD and click Change.
Click Next, and then click Updªte.
Reboot.

If you still have the same problem, try this:

First exit WD, click the down arrow to the right of the white question mark
in blue circle and then click Exit Windows Defender; using Add or Remove
Programs in Control Panel.
Click WD and click Support Information and click Repair.

Reboot.
Let us know how it works ºut

Thanks Engel,

I did what you said for the first go around and if that fixes the probelm I
will know in the morning, if not I'll try the next suggestion and see what
that brings.

Philip,

I should have listed my anti - spy and virus programs. I don't have Windows
Live Care but I do have Spyware Blaster, AVG 7.5 Pro, CounterSpy, AdAware,
the free AVG Anti-Spyware, A2Squared, Spybot, and of course WD.

Thank you both for the help, we'll see how it goes. :-)

The other perhaps relevant question would be whether you are using a
registry cleaner. When you say "turn off"--do you simply mean that the icon
has gone away, or are the background services actually not running?

Hi Yvsa,

Looking in your tool box, I'm incline to said, one anti-virus working RTP,
one anti-spyware also RTP, after that, we can have more anti-spyware on
demand only.

I'm putting the cart in front of the horse. So one of those (AVG 7.5 Pro,
CounterSpy, or the free AVG Anti-Spyware) are canceling WD.

You will have to test wich one is the culprit. Unistall WD and the others.
Reboot. Install WD and AVG Anti-Spyware, and test.

Good luck

Hello Yvsa,

Windows Defender shouldn't be turning itself off. Could you make sure next
morning that MSASCUI.exe is not running? Also please verify that the
"Always" option next to "Choose when the program icon appears in the
notification window" is set--you should then always see at a glance whether
Defender is running or not.

Philip

I wouldn't even know how to manually "turn off" Windows Defender. So if
it's not running in the morning, it means it has crashed overnight. Can
you check the Event Log Viewer if there is any info on that crash?

Hi Engel, et al:

Thanks for the good help. After I clicked the "Change Program" in the "Add
or Delete" page and rebooted WD has been fine since.
And I should have been more clear about the spyware, everything except
CounterSpy is on demand only. The CounterSpy and AVG Pro are the only ones
active all the time but I do appreciate the advise.

I would have replied sooner but for some reason my IE-7 won't open when I
click on the reply button, it just clicks in my tower. Also does it when I
click - open in a new window. Weird.

Hi Yvsa,

Glad to help and thanx for updating the thread.

I really can't comment on IE-7 I don't have enough experience yet with the
new version

I'm sure you'll get more detailed help from the guys who know a lot more

Defender is definitley turning itself off. I've done the Change and Repair
as recommended and it still turns itself off. I just read something about
seeing if msascui.exe is running, (or not)? Im not sure where I can find this
out, and I need some guidance here. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled
Defender, and I'm at my half-wits end to get it right. Because the program
closes itslef down, there is no way for it to be doing any checking at 2 AM.
I also have Spybot installed, can that have something to do with
anything?????????????????????????????

Your help will be sincerly appreciated.

Infla23,

You might want to start a new subject line because this one was settled for
me. But although my problem was solved initially it came back. Come to find
out it was my Sunbelt SpySweeper that kept shutting Windows Defender off.
Sunbelt knows about the problem and is taking steps to fix it.
I wish I could help but my computer experience is limited and not like the
folks here that are so helpful...
