Windows Defender - Error 1920

My brother is having difficulty installing Windows Defender onto his Windows
XP Professional (SP2) machine. He`s just installed Windows and it was one of
the first programs he installed after his anti-virus. Every time he tries to
install it, he`s getting the following message:

Service `Windows Defender Service` (WinDefend) failed to start.
Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services

We`ve both had a search on the internet for a solution and it seems that
only people who have Windows 2000 SP4 have this problem.

Is there anything that can be done?

Best simple advice is to go to Windows Update, do an express scan, and
install all offered updates.

If that doesn't do the job, please come to the Windows Defender support
groups, where we'll be happy to try to dig into this further--you are quite
right that this is mostly a Windows 2000 issue, and I'm not sure I have a
solid answer to what's going on there either!
