I tried to upgrade Defender at end of Jan. The download of the permanent
version will NOT delete the older version and I get the error 0x80070003, the
installation aborts. . The notice says that the older version cannot deleted.
I have tried everything I know to do to delete the Beta in order to install
the program to no avail. I have deleted the contents of download and
datastore with no result. Is my problem unique, or has someone found the cure?

Hello Mamsvolm,

Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
administrator.
This is the key!
The installation as an admin is not enough.
You needed to login as an Administrator.

Can you go to Windows Update, select Express (Get high-priority updates),
and apply all offered updates
http://update.microsoft.com

Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs? There are many
pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and signature update
with windows defender will fail until you have these f!les.

Install Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (3.1.4000.2435) is availªble here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803

Locate your file msi.dll (with search if you are not sure where it's
located) and confirm what the version is, either from it's properties or just
passing your cursor over it. If it's not the latest which is 3.1.4000.2435,
then:

Windows Installer Cleanup
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301
Use it to remove both Windows Defender... items listed. You should then
reinstall Windows Defender, and, if you wish, uninstall it again.
If you use a version of Microsoft Office which is covered by Office Update,
you should check whether you are able to update via that mechanism still.

To resolve this problem, remove the download directory, and then visit the
update locations again.
To do this, follow these steps:

1.Stop the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:

a. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Stop.
c. Minimize the Services snap-in.

2.Remove the download directory.
To do this, follow these steps:

a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
rmdir /s %windir%\softwaredistribution
c. When you receive the "Are you sure (Y/N)†prompt, type y, and then press
ENTER.
d.Type exit, and then press ENTER .

Note When you remove the %windir%\softwaredistribution folder, the history
list is erased from the "Review your Updates" section of the Windows Update
Web site.

This action will not affect the currently installed updates on your
computer.

Subsequent updates will appear in the history list.

3.Start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Maximize the Services snap-in.
b. Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Start.
c. Close the Services snap-in window.

4.Visit the Windows Update Web site, the Microsoft Update Web site, or the
WSUS server again, and then download an update.

5.If you still receive the same errors, verify that you have correctly
performed steps 1 through 3.

6. If you still cannot install the update, see the following Microsoft
Knowledge Base article:

Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server Update Services installation
issues

Engel, your answer was exactly correct!! Installer Cleanup did the trick.
Once the old was deleted, no problem installing the new version. that also
repaired an Adobe Reader problem which had the same symptoms. THANK YOU!!

Hi mamsvol,
