I have tried several times and each time windows defender downloads as a word
pad.
how do I get it to install, do I need a special installer for it
running windows 2000 SP4

The name of the downloaded file should be windowsdefender.msi.

If you download and safe to the desktop, is this what you see?

What happens when you double-click on that file?

I would also check to make sure you are running the latest version of Windows
Installer Service (MSI) for your OS.

Windows Installer 3.1 is a critical update at WindowsUpdate, and is required
for correct operation of Windows Defender.

I installed the 3.1 update it did not help
when I download it, it saves it as windows defender but the icon looks like
word pad document.
when I try to open it it says windows cant find windows defender this
program is needed to open this type of file msi.
it asks me for the location of file and I direct it but it says cant find.
I have tried to download it with several browsers but no luck
I have tried to open it with several programs but it wont work

I went to properties of windows defender file and it says opens with unknown
application.
any idea what I should direct it to open with ?

Try this:

Go to a command prompt in a folder in which the windowsdefender.msi file
exists.

msiexec /i windowsdefender.msi

I believe that the Windows Installer isn't properly installed on your
system--otherwise .MSI files should be associated with the installer.

I tried it with command prompt but it did the same it starts to install but
then I get this error
the windows installer service could not be accessed.
This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode or
if the windows installer is not correctly installed.
contact your support personnel for assistance.
then all I can do is click ok

I tried to download the program again but it always saves it with an icon
that looks like a word pad.

I had downloaded it before but i did again.
I think the windowsdefender.msi file does not dave properly to my hard drive
as the icon that it sves it as looks like a note pad file.
Also when I try to open it I have to point what to open with it says unknown
program opens file.
I just downloaded another MSI prgram file from microsoft and it saves it the
same way with the icon that looks like a note pad.
maybe there is something wrong with my computer I am ready to give up

I would have thought that the installer package would correct this, but it
has not, for at least three users with a similar issue--each with a
different icon and assocation, however.

OK - -

Try:

scroll down to fix #94, and try the first link on that line-open the file to
merge it into the registry.
