Another question i'd like to ask:
1-i ran vista, for e.g -when i try to update Windows Defender via the app.
it self- there is notification from the task bar without notification sound.
do you have the same situation?
2-in Windows Update (i set it only to inform me, not download).
there is a balloon notification but no sound.
(In XP baloon notif. sound is working but not in my vista...)
i'ts vista default behavior?

Windows Defender Delta Update: 1.67.543.0 Link

The link is as follows:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/m..._5cd295eccc0385a72f6dd27d10d8f8b54cc89b49.exe
Size is only 415 kb, and it will not trigger a system restore point

As always, if you need the Full Engine and Full Defs update
[for example after a new install/reinstall of Defender]
you can get it at the Microsoft Malware Protection Center:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/
https://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Definitions/ADL.aspx
The full MPAS-FE is currently 11 MB

[As of this moment: (11:07am CDT USA)
the "pushed" version and the portal version are in sync ]

Don't know what to say
In order to get the update [on an XP machine, with System Restore turned
on], I use the GUI in WD [Check for Updates] and a SRP IS created.
Are you sure this was not the machine that you said SR was turned off on ?

I am really not the person to ask Vista questions about, have you ever
noticed my .sig :-P

I am on XP and all my balloons make a pop sound

Tim

Tim,
i do not understand something:
1-also WD update via it's GUI (i thought only WU) will create SRP?
2-i understood you do not vista just now :)
3- can somebody please test the sound issue in VISTA upon taskbar balloon
notification i asked in my previous question?
it's driving me mad!!

Yes, unless something has changed since testing was done before the release
of WD way back when.

Anything that uses WU/AU as it's CORE will trigger a SRP.
The GUI in WD uses/calls/invokes AU in some way I think, that is why after
using the GUI to update I am able to find the link inside the file:
C:\windows\windowsupdate.log
Along with all the other updates that have come thru A/U or WU

AU and WU are companions to each other so, to speak, and since MS intended
the usual method of updating WD to be AU I guess that the GUI "Check for
Updates" is tied in to AU as well.

Wow, it's been a long time. I remember the long discussions about WD
updates and SRP's from ages ago. It is One of the reasons that the link
started to be provided in these groups. The use of the link, or the download
of the Full MPAS-FE, is the only way to Not get a SRP when updating Defender,
If I recall correctly and if nothing has changed.

Remember though, the creation of a SRP upon updating WD is not a horrible
thing, it's just annoying to some of us who prefer to have more control of
how and when SRP's are created.

And again, I have no idea how it works in Vista [or in Win7 for that matter]

By the way, Can you tell me your name in English, I don't read Hebrew and
like to know who I'm talking to.

?:-)

**Again thanks for your answer- everything with SRP/XP/VISTA is fine now &

***still hope someone with vista will test the sound notification issue.
