I recently downloaded Windows Defender. The question I have is this: Do I
have to just minimize this program or can I exit the program and still have
real-time protection running? I have the Real-Time Protection turned on.

This is a source of some confusion--yes, just exit the program. Real-time
protection is provided by the Windows Defender Service--which is a system
service with no user interface. If you hit ctrl-alt-delete and go to Task
Manager, look for msmpeng.exe (thats the Windows Defender service )and
msascui.exe.

The design is that the icon will only show up if a user action is needed.

Hmm.

Can you go to a command prompt? If so, then try these commands:

net start

(this should list all the running services--look for Windows Defender near
the end of the list.)

If it is not there, try:

net start windefend

and see whether you get an error message--if so, post that error back to
this thread.

If windows defender service is started--you are fine.

Good--I think all is well. The icon will appear if anything needs
doing--scanning, updates, or whatever.
