Can you still use WD with Win2000? I know it says it no longer supports it
but will it still work in Windows 2000 Pro?

Hi Scott,

I don't have a Windows 2000 machine around to test this on, but if you are
willing to do some experimenting and leg work you might still be able to get
Windows Defender to install and work on a Windows 2000 machine.

The first obstacle you would confront would be the MSI installer package for
Windows Defender, if it detects Windows 2000 it will abort the install. You
can hack the Windows Defender MSI installer package and get it to install on
a Windows 2000 system by using ORCA(Microsoft's MSI editor).

How To:

Download Orca (Microsoft's MSI editor) and install it.
Download Windows Defender.
Use Orca to open the Windows Defender msi setup file.
Find and Highlight the "Launch Condition" item in the left pane of ORCA.
Find and Highlight the "VersionNT > 500" value in the right pane of ORCA and
delete it.
Save the modified file.
Run the msi installer.

The second obstacle would be GDI+, as before, you must have the GDI+ from
Microsoft
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915052
installed on your Windows 2000 system for Windows Defender to work.

A possible third obstacle would be the MSVCR80.DLL not found problem as
pointed out in Dave's post.
Deleting "c:\program files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe.manifest" should
make this problem go away.

No guarantees that even if you are able to overcome these obstacles that it
will run properly or update definitions properly, but if you are willing to
experiment this might be worth a try.

Good luck,

Donald Anadell
