Hi, i bought a new Sony Vaio laptop that came with windows vista home basic,
i have Windows
Defender installed by default, but everytime i click to open the program it
says that is deactivated.

i activate the program but later i found it deactivated again, is that
normal?

What other security software came pre-installed, or has been installed by
you?

Windows Live OneCare, and Microsoft Forefront Client Security will both
disable Windows Defender by design, when active.

I suspect current versions of other security suites products that include an
anti-spyware component, and run on Vista--will also disable Windows Defender
in favor of their own protection.

As Bill noted, Windows Live OneCare disables Defender (and also the
Windows firewall) since it includes spyware protection and enhances
it. It actually shares the same antimalware engine with Defender.
