I recently updated my Defender from the Beta version to the above version.
Now Defender is saying that a new software update is available. I try to
connect to update my version but during the install process at the moment
when Defender tries to remove the old version of Defender, i get the
following error:

"...enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package
'WindowsDefender[1].msi in the box below"

The box is looking in the default path which i havent changed at all
C:\Documents and Settings\my name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\4HWBKRKR\

I have looked there and there is no folder entitled Temporary Internet
Files. I tried to create that folder and replicate the rest of the path in an
attempt to create a dummy such file so that the installation could complete
but i couldnt as i receive a message saying cant create a folder with such a
name as one already exists. But it doesnt!!! and hidden files and folders are
set to be shown.

I cant see any other way to remove manually Defender to allow for the new
version to be installed.

Please help!

Try this: in folder options uncheck the item "Hide protected operating
system files". You should then be able to find the Temporary Internet Files
folder.

Hope this works for you.

Yes that has certainly worked and indeed i can now see the file
('WindowsDefender[1].msi) but i cant seem to change the hidden attribute of
that folder via File\Properties, it is greyed out. Consequently when i run
the Defender update it still cant find that .msi file.

Any ideas? (and thanks so far)

Try in safe mode.

can you copy the file to a known (and unhidden!) location?

I had the same problem and after trying all the suggestions on this forum
that didn't work I went on the internet and found the old installation files
at http://mymirrors.homelinux.org/freeware/WindowsDefender/. I copied the
Beta2 .msi file to the location the new Windows Defender install was looking
for (had to also rename it slightly to match what it was looking for) and
then the install could FINALLY complete.

I know getting files off the internet from an unknown source is risky but
since Microsoft is not offering these old files that I could find, I felt I
had to use this file to allow the new Defender to uninstall the old. The new
install file came from Microsoft.
